Bryce Gerlach was Loved – Hundreds Remember Corydon Teen Murdered Near Harvest Homecoming at Vigil

Bryce Gerlach, an 18-year-old shot and killed during a shooting at Harvest Homecoming Saturday night in New Albany, Indiana, is being remembered for being a great friend, son, student, and colleague.

Hundreds gathered for a candlelight vigil at the Corydon Central High School football field in a touching moment of solidarity with the family of the slain teen.

The gathered multitude were seen headed to the field behind Gerlach’s family where the vigil took place with many in tears and stunned silence.

Other vigils were planned at the Harrison County Fairgrounds and at New Albany Fire Station #1.

Witnessing the vigil WAVE Journalist Alena Noakes, who said of Gerlach: “This kid was loved. Hundreds upon hundreds of people from this community have come out for a candlelit vigil, walking behind Bryce Gerlach’s family to the high school football field. Lots of tears and hugs and a very heavy silence.”

This sentiment was echoed by a teacher of Bryce’s, who said of him: “Bryce Gerlach was truly a special kid. He was kind-hearted and full of energy. He had a passion for soccer and living life to the fullest. Bryce taught me a lot as a teacher…I remember him reading sports magazines, and I told him I didn’t care because I just wanted him to learn to love to read.”

Gerlach was the sole fatality of the Saturday night shooting which occurred during Harvest Homecoming in New Albany.

New Albany Police were called to the area of State Street and Black Avenue around 10 p.m. on Saturday, October 12.

Authorities arrived to find three gunshot victims, one boy who had been killed and two injured adults.

The injured adults – a 22-year-old man and 42-year-old woman – were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police believe a dispute broke out within a group of people who started firing. None of those shot had any connection to the shooters or their dispute.

Authorities have identified several persons of interest but yet to make an arrest.
