Catholic Priests To Lead Prayer Walk Against Galamsey

Catholic priests in Accra will be holding a prayer walk against illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, on October 11, 2024. The event is scheduled to begin at 10 am, starting from the Cathedral and concluding at Christ the King Parish.

This prayer walk is part of a larger effort to raise awareness about the destructive impact of galamsey on the country’s water bodies and forest reserves. The Catholic Archdiocese of Accra will be leading the initiative, rallying Ghanaians from all walks of life to unite in prayer and action to combat this environmental crisis.

Each priest is expected to bus their parishioners to the event and make announcements during their church services on October 6, 2024, to encourage participation. Over 50 organizations that have previously expressed concerns about illegal mining are expected to join the protest, combining prayer with public demonstrations to call for an end to the devastation caused by galamsey.

This event aims to emphasize the urgent need for collective action in addressing the environmental damage and protecting Ghana’s natural resources.
