Pastor Enoch Adeboye Apologizes for Saying ‘Non-Tithers Won’t Make It to Heaven’

Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye, the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), has publicly apologized for a previous statement he made about tithing. Speaking at the RCCG national youth convention, Pastor Adeboye acknowledged that he was wrong to say that people who do not pay tithes would not make it to heaven.

In his apology, the cleric said, “I am going to be talking to everybody as soon as God permits me. I am going to apologize for making a mistake in saying that if you don’t pay tithe, you will not be making it to heaven. That is wrong. That is not in the Bible.”

He explained that the Bible teaches that peace and holiness are essential for salvation, citing the verse, “Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord.” He also admitted, “It is possible to be right and wrong at the same time,” comparing his previous teaching on tithing to outdated scientific beliefs, like when people once thought that light only traveled in a straight line.

Pastor Adeboye’s initial remarks on tithing were made in April 2018 during a monthly Holy Ghost Service, where he had urged pastors to remind their congregants that not paying tithes could prevent them from entering heaven. At the time, he said, “Anyone who is not paying his tithe is not going to heaven, full stop.” He encouraged church leaders to go back to their congregations and emphasize the importance of tithing.

Although he has now admitted that this specific teaching was incorrect, Pastor Adeboye still urged people to be generous in their giving, using the example of King Solomon, who gave abundant offerings to God and was rewarded with peace and prosperity. He emphasized that giving must be done wholeheartedly, as it brings blessings and divine favor.
