From her prison cell, activist and lawyer Elorm Ama Ababio, widely known as Ama Governor, has voiced her support for the #FreeTheCitizens protest in a heartfelt letter.

The protest, which began on October 3, 2024, was sparked by a social media movement demanding the release of Ama and nearly 50 others arrested during an earlier demonstration led by the Democracy Hub against illegal mining, commonly referred to as galamsey.

In her powerful letter to the protesters, Ama Governor began with the rallying cry, “Dear Comrades, when I say ‘Aluta!’ you respond ‘Continua!’” Her words were filled with hope and determination, strengthening the resolve of those marching.

She reflected on the significance of the moment, stating, “Ghana has never witnessed a day as important as this, October 3, 2024, when the youth, despite attempts to divide us, have chosen unity. Together, we march side by side, fighting against the devastating impact of galamsey on the health, resources, and well-being of our nation. We are demanding accountability from the government and freedom for political prisoners.”

Ama also invoked the spirit of Ghana’s first president, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, expressing that his legacy would be proud of their actions. “His soul smiles on us today,” she wrote, highlighting the historical weight of their cause.

Ama Governor’s letter has touched the hearts of many, sparking widespread support on social media as the protest continues.
