‘Our Water Bodies Now Look Like Milo’ – Okyeame Kwame Urges President Akufo-Addo to Take Action Against Galamsey

Published by

Ghanaian musician Okyeame Kwame, during an appearance on UTV’s United Showbiz, urged President Akufo-Addo to take decisive action to end illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey. He emphasized that galamsey is destroying the nation’s water resources, referencing recent protests and public outcry to stop the practice.

Okyeame Kwame reminded the president of his promise before assuming office, when he vowed to put his presidency on the line to tackle the galamsey issue. With only three months left until the next election, the musician questioned why the president hasn’t acknowledged the dire state of Ghana’s water bodies, many of which now resemble ‘Milo’ due to severe pollution.

He called on President Akufo-Addo to issue a directive halting all galamsey activities immediately, with strict punishments for those who defy the order. Okyeame Kwame speculated that the president might be hesitant to act out of fear of losing votes, but urged him to prioritize the nation’s welfare over political considerations.

With the executive power at his disposal, the president can mandate stakeholder engagements to find a sustainable solution, Okyeame Kwame added. He further stressed that air and water are the most vital resources for human survival, and the destruction of Ghana’s water bodies should be addressed without partisan politics. “Let’s set aside NPP and NDC, and let our love for Ghana guide us in solving this problem,” he passionately urged.
