A group of Ghanaians in New York took to the streets on Wednesday, 25 September, following President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s address at the UN General Assembly.
The protesters demanded the release of at least 42 members of the Democracy Hub, who were arrested and detained back in Ghana. Videos circulating online show demonstrators holding signs calling for better governance, an end to corruption, and a more independent and fair judiciary system.
What began as a peaceful demonstration against illegal mining (galamsey) and economic hardships escalated into a confrontation with the police , further intensifying the public’s frustration.
The protestors abroad voiced their concerns, chanting: “Stop illegal mining in Ghana. Release the protesters now!
