Freddy played varsity football his freshman and sophomore years. He was also a high level wrestler, having competed in wrestling for Saugus Middle High School and Peabody High School. He was a member of the Red Roots Wrestling Club (RRWC), a North Reading, Massachusetts based non-profit dedicated to promoting the benefits of wrestling through training and mentoring.

One of Espinal’s RWWC coaches, Coach Wayne Moda, penned a touching tribute to the young man, writing: “Freddy was a larger-than-life personality on and off the mat. He was passionate about his family and wrestling which he worked incredibly hard at after falling in love with the sport his freshman year. Wrestling aside, I thoroughly enjoyed him as a person, he genuinely made me laugh with his antics and he was committed to his teammates and friends,”

To help his family navigate these difficult times, a GoFundMe has been started for Freddy Espinall. Organized by coach Moda, the fundraiser had raised $19,841 out of its $30,000 goal at the time of publication.
