Prophet Kumchacha has made a surprising claim about Asamoah Gyan and the 2010 FIFA World Cup. He said that the former Black Stars captain missed an important penalty on purpose because of his political ties. Kumchacha made this statement on UTV’s United Showbiz on Saturday, September 14, 2024.
According to him, Gyan, who is a supporter of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), missed the penalty to stop the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) from gaining any credit.
Kumchacha believes Gyan’s support for the NPP influenced his decision to miss, which could have taken Ghana to the semi-finals, a historic moment for any African team. “Everyone knows Gyan supports the NPP. That’s why he missed the penalty in 2010. The NDC was in power, and he didn’t want them to get the glory,” Kumchacha claimed.
In the 2010 World Cup quarter-final against Uruguay, with the score level at 1-1 and only minutes remaining, Asamoah Gyan had the opportunity to secure victory for Ghana with a penalty kick. Unfortunately, his shot struck the crossbar, and Ghana eventually lost in the following penalty shootout, creating one of the most heartbreaking moments in the nation’s football history.
