It’s Not Just Politicians, Chiefs Are Engaged in Galamsey Too – Kennedy Agyapong

Published by

Kennedy Agyapong, Assin Central Member of Parliament (MP)  has revealed that the illegal mining activities, known as galamsey, in Ghana are not solely the actions of politicians but also involve traditional leaders.

In an interview with 3News, Agyapong highlighted that certain chiefs are deeply involved in the illegal mining operations, alongside politicians.

He recounted an instance from his constituency where he encountered individuals possessing mining equipment. When questioned, they admitted to paying a local chief GH₵2,000 and giving him a sheep in exchange for permission to mine in the area.

Agyapong emphasized that solving the issue requires boldly acknowledging the truth, noting, “The problem is from the constituencies. I can also tell you that some of the chiefs are involved, not just politicians.” He added that patriotism and honesty are crucial to addressing the menace, urging all stakeholders to take responsibility.
