Garrett Nichols, BYU Hawaii Student Killed in Swimming Accident

A student with the Brigham Young University – Hawaii, Garrett Nichols, has died following a swimming accident.

Nichols, of Haleiwa, was reported in critical condition on Friday, September 6th by students of the University, who reported receiving an email from school authorities.

According to the email, Garrett Nichols, a senior from Atascadero, California, had been involved in a swimming accident earlier that day. He was sent to hospital where he remained in critical condition

On Saturday, September 7th, Garrett Nichols’ death was announced by BYU-Hawaii in a statement shared on social media.

It is with heavy hearts we share the news that BYUH student Garrett Nichols has passed away,” the statement read.

According to his LinkedIn account, Nichols was studying for a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management, Marketing and Related Support Services and was slated to graduate in 2026.

He was a District Leader for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and ran his own business, Cowabunga Services in Oahu. Nichols organized students to work in Event setup and takedowns, home demolition, landscaping and car detailing. He was also the Social Media Manager at Bolt Motorcycle Hardware. Nichols graduated from Atascadero High School.

His family shared an obituary with the school describing him as a person who lived life to the fullest and enjoyed helping others. He served in numerous missions for the Mormon church including the Mexico Tuxtla Gutierrez Mission and the Alaska Anchorage Mission.

Fellow students described him as someone who was a delight to everyone who came across him.

“He truly was a light to everyone around him. His positive, happy, and friendly personality was infectious and he lived life to the fullest! I won’t forget the fun memories we had serving in the Alaska Anchorage Mission together!” read on tribute on social media.
