A GoFundMe launched for a Fort Lauderdale realtor, Alex Smythe, who died following complications from the autoimmune disease dermatomyositis, is targeting raising $100k in donations.
Smythe, 34, from Fort Lauderdale, died on Friday, August 30th, 2024, after months battling the rare autoimmune disease.
The D’Angelo Realty Group realtor was educated at the Florida Gulf Coast University where he graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing. He leaves behind a wife, Brittany Maher Smythe, and a 19-month-old son Dylan.

Smythe was diagnosed with MDA-5 associated with Interstitial Lung Disease in July, a few months after his health unexpectedly deteriorated and left him unable to work. He’d been hospitalized since August 9th until his eventual demise.
To support his widow, who was a stay-at-home mom and his infant son, the family launched a GoFundMe. With a goal of $100,000, the fundraiser had pulled in $81,562 at the time of filing this report.
