Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Destools Three Chiefs Over Illegal Mining

Published by

Three chiefs have faced the stern judgment of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, leading to their destoolment; the Sabronum Gyaasehene, the Akyeamhene, and the Baamuhene.

The chiefs’ removal from office was declared during the Asanteman Council meeting on August 26, 2024, at the Manhyia Palace, following a thorough investigation into their involvement in illegal mining activities, commonly known as galamsey.

The trio incurred the wrath of the Asantehene following a review of a petition submitted by concerned inhabitants of the traditional area. The petition accused the Gyaasehene of engaging in illegal mining and contributing to the destruction of the area’s only source of drinking water, the River Asuonfou.

In his address, Otumfuo emphasized that traditional rulers are the custodians of the land, tasked with ensuring its responsible use for the benefit of the community and future generations. He expressed deep disappointment that these chiefs, who were entrusted with such important responsibilities, had violated the trust of their people and contributed to environmental degradation. The Asantehene’s decisive action sends a powerful message that the Asante kingdom will not tolerate activities that threaten the environment and the well-being of its citizens.
