Chase Johnson Sprint Car Accident – What Happened to Chase Johnson Racing?

American Sprint car racer Chase Dominic Johnson was left in critical condition following a terrible accident during the Gold Cup Race of Champions.

Johnson was competing in the 70th Gold Cup Sprint car race at Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico, California the night of Saturday, August 24th when he was involved in a brutal car crash that has left him fighting for his life.

The crash left the 28-year-old in critical condition as he was transported to UC Davis Medical Center for emergency medical care after suffering serious neck and back injuries.

Following the crash, he underwent surgery at the UCD Medical Center on Sunday. On Monday, it was reported he had been upgraded from critical to stable condition.

News of the crash was revealed on social media by numerous people in the Sprint Car racing world, many of whom witnessed the crash.

Shop Dog Garage was providing play by play of the race and wrote immediately following the accident Saturday night: “Chase Johnson bad crash in turn two. Chico fire and rescue called to the track to possibly cut the cage off. He’s talking and alert but once they get him out of the car, he’ll transported to a local hospital for further evaluation. Long red flag….cars refuelling,”

By midday Sunday the news in was that Johnson was still in critical condition and being sent in to surgery.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to Chase Johnson, who was seriously injured in a sprint car crash at the Gold Cup Race of Champions. He has neck and back injuries and has been transferred to UC Davis Medical Center,” Sports Promoter NARC King of the West revealed in a post on Facebook.

Numerous other posters wished Johnson well, with many noting how talented and hardworking he is and also his sunny disposition.

In a new update Monday, the Chase Johnson Racing Facebook page revealed he’s out of surgery, in stable condition and with a breathing tube. The surgery lasted nine hours on Sunday and repaired fractures in his C4, C5, and C6 vertebrae. The surgery removed pieces of bone that broke off, repaired the damaged areas with a spinal fusion, and stabilized his neck using plates and screws.

The page adds that Johnson should be able to speak later Monday when his breathing tube is removed.

Meanwhile, following the crash, the race continued and defending champion Corey Day won his second Gold Cup in as many years.

Who is Chase Johnson Racing?

Chase Johnson is a 28-year-old Sprint Car racer from Penngrove, California. Johnson races the 410 and 360 Winged and Non Wing Sprint Cars, Silver Crown Cars, Midgets and Outlaw Karts.

Coming from a family of racers, Johnson is a 4th generation racer, 6 time Outlaw Kart Champion and a 360 Winged Sprint Car Champion.

He holds a Bachelors degree in Business Management from Sonoma State University and an Associate Degree in Business Management.

According to his bio from his website, Johnson was involved in a terrible accident prior to this, in 2013 when a steering wheel malfunction led to the deaths of his 14 year old cousin Marcus Johnson and another gentleman, Dale Wondergem Jr. who was a 68 year old car owner.

He took a break from racing following this but eventually returned and now races in honor of those two lives lost.
