Who is Michael McMaster? Paulding County Deputy Fired After Body Slamming Tyler Canaris

A Paulding County Sheriff’s Deputy, Michael McMaster was fired after an incident in which he body slammed one Tyler Canaris in violent fashion.

According to reports, the incident triggering McMaster’s firing occurred on March 4th, 2022 around 6 a.m. when Canaris was on his way to work and ran into the Paulding Deputy seeking a suspect.

Officers were looking for a suspect who was breaking into cars and according to McMaster Canaris matched the description.

McMaster approached Canaris and started barking orders, asking to see his hands, his phone and asking him to take off his backpack. Canaris attempted to find out why he was being arrested and Deputy McMaster initially refused to do so simply stating he was going to arrest him hence he should comply with the orders.

Canaris kept asking questions and Deputy Michael McMaster finally told him he matched the description of a suspect accused of breaking into cars. Canaris then denied being that suspect but McMaster persisted with the arrest, finally slamming him to the ground.

The violent body slam, which was captured on an in-vehicle camera, reportedly left Tyler Canaris, who was completely innocent, with a a fractured skull, a ruptured ear drum, and a concussion.

The X (Twitter) account Internet Hall of fame shared the video, prompting this illuminating reply from one X user: “The Paulding County sheriff’s deputy, Michael Marsh, was terminated on Feb. 27 due to other policy violations. McMaster was accused of slamming 30-year-old Tyler Canaris to the ground during an arrest in March 2022,”

Incredibly, following the incident Canaris was charged with obstruction of justice. McMaster was never punished and continued working.

A year after the incident, in February 2023, the video of the incident was publicly released sparking an outcry. McMaster was placed on desk duty and a few days later, was fired by the Paulding County Sheriff’s Office for policy violations not related to the Canaris incident.

Following the incident, Canaris filed a federal lawsuit in September 2023 claiming civil rights violations and seeking unspecified damages for “his physical and mental pain and suffering, loss of enjoyment of life, and emotional distress.”

Canaris accused McMaster of essentially being a bully cop, claiming he had a “history and problem with anger management which caused him to abuse and violate the constitutional rights of citizens”
