Gregory Purvis, an officer with the New York City police Department (NYPD) has been reported dead following an apparent suicide.
It was reported on Tuesday afternoon, August 20th that an off-duty NYPD cop had committed suicide.
The reports said the officer had been found in a pool of blood after parking his car near an apartment building in Upper Manhattan, going inside and then shooting himself.
After not hearing from him for a while, his partner visited the apartment and found him deceased.
Social media posts identified the NYPD cop as Gregory Purvis.
Beyond the Badge NY, a non profit which deals with mental health of first responders, shared a post offering prayers and thoughts over the tragic death of the officer, who they identified as an officer of the 30th precinct, Gregory J. Purvis.
The post lamented the tragic reality of yet another young first responder finding their job too overwhelming and deciding to end it all. It praised Purvis for his four years of dedicated service and expressed hope that he could finally feel some peace.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family, friends, the responding officers in the 34 and fellow officers of PO Gregory Purvis from the 30. Another young life leaving this world too soon. 4 years of dedication and commitment to serving the community.
“Thank you for your service & May you finally be at peace… your memory shall live on through all those who knew and loved you.. Sleep in Peace,” the post said.

Beyond the Badge added for officers in distress that they should know that there is help available and to reach out to access it rather than taking such drastic action.
Meanwhile, the National Latino Peace Officers Association (NLPOA), Bronx Chapter, had some words of condolences for the family and friends of Officer Purvis.
They noted that mental health struggles are real and difficult and noted the importance of officers supporting one another at their lowest points.
“If you or someone you know is struggling, please reach out—there is always help available. Rest in peace, Officer Purvis. Your service and dedication will never be forgotten,” the NLPOA Bronx NY Chapter wrote on social media.
The tragic suicide of Officer Purvis illustrates the drastic toll many of those who sign up for law enforcement and the military put themselves through to serve everyone else.
May he rest in peace.
