Pastor Mensa Otabil, the Founder and General Overseer of the International Central Gospel Church, recently urged singles not to delay marriage while waiting to accumulate wealth. In a sermon that has sparked widespread discussion on social media, he challenged the common belief that financial stability is a must before tying the knot.
Pastor Otabil shared how he and his wife began their journey with very little. “When I got married, I didn’t have much—no bed, no chair, not even basic cutlery. My wife can attest that our first piece of furniture was an old bench that I repurposed and painted white.” “If you’re waiting to be rich before you marry, your head is not working,” he added.
“You don’t want to marry, but you’re sleeping together. You want what’s reserved for marriage without going through the process. Be bold and marry,” he urged.
He reassured couples that the church is ready to support those who prefer a simple marriage ceremony without the pressure of extravagant celebrations. “Set a date. If a veil makes you anxious, skip it; if wearing a gown feels overwhelming, don’t bother. Just come to the church office, declare, ‘This is the woman I want, and this is the man I want.’ We’ll ask, ‘Do you?’ and when you say, ‘I do,’ that’s it. You’ll begin your life together, and you’ll find that the challenges you encounter are easier to handle.”
