Adan De La Cruz, a high school student and football player with the Nikki Rowe High School in McAllen, Texas, is fighting for his life following a tragic accident.

De La Cruz was injured Sunday during a party at a family residence when his attempted stunt to jump into a pool went awry.

He reportedly seriously injured himself in the attempt and is currently in hospital receiving treatment. His family and friends are currently praying and hoping he pulls through.

A statement on the tragedy released on social media read: “It is with a heavy heart that we share the news that one of our seniors, Adan De La Cruz, was involved in a tragic accident last night. According to reports, the entire ill-fated pool jump was captured on video and some people have been sharing it on social media. However, his family requested people stop sharing them.

A prayer vigil organized for De La Cruz Sunday night at Nikki Rowe stadium was canceled at the request of his parents, the Nikki Rowe Student Council announced. It was then rescheduled for Monday as a group get-together to show support. The School District announced counselors would be provided on campus on Monday and beyond.

Adan was described by friends as a star athlete and student who was a leader among men.

The Nikki Rowe senior was named a First Team All-District 15-5A DI selection as a last season after posting a team-leading 82 total tackles and five tackles for loss in 10 games.

A GoFundMe has been started to aid in raising cash for his medical expenses and more.

“The Bramble Family is organizing this GoFundMe for the De La Cruz family, and we’re asking the community for prayers of strength for their beloved son, Adan De La Cruz III (Adancito). Please find it in your hearts to include them in your prayers, the fundraiser said.

As of Wednesday, August 21st, the fundraiser has raised over $15,000 out of its $24,000 stated goal.

Meanwhile, authorities arrested two people on Monday, August 19th, 51-year-old Jaime Islas, who is charged with furnishing alcohol to a minor, and his juvenile son, who faces the same charge.

“Jaime Islas and the juvenile are suspected of providing access (to) alcoholic drinks to minors at a residence, including the victim,” police said in a press statement.

“Large amounts of various alcoholic beverages were observed at the scene by responding officers.”

More charges are expected to be filed against the suspects in coming days.
