Sean Dragoneer Piche, Owner of FurAffinity Sadly Dies – Cause of Death Sparks Outrage

Dragoneer, real name Sean Piche, the owner and founder of the furry art site furaffinity.net, has died.

Dragoneer’s death was announced by his collaborators on the site he created which was loved by so many, Furaffinity.net.

The post read: “It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden loss of Fur Affinity’s owner, Dragoneer. He was our friend, family, and a pillar of this community. We ask for your patience and respect for his family’s privacy. We remain committed to supporting each other and the community,”

Dragoneer Cause of Death

Sean Piche aka Dragoneer was born in 1980 and died in August 2024, making him at 44 at the time of his death.

Dragoneer rose to fame due to his creation of the biggest online platform for the creation of furry-centric art, be it artwork, stories, photography or audio recordings.

The site he created, Fur Affinity grew into the largest such platform online by the time of his death, with estimates putting its monthly traffic at around 20 million visitors.

Despite his massive success, Dragoneer ended up being undone by the cutthroat, for-profit health insurance industry in the United States and that has sparked outrage following his death.

During his final few weeks, Dragoneer had shared incredibly heartless messages he had received from his health insurance company as he attempted to receive treatment for what ended up causing his death, a sort of lung infection/cancer some have claimed was blastomycosis.

In one text he shared online, he was sent a message from his provider, UVA Health that he would need over 25grand for a doctor’s appointment.

Another message he shared showed he needed almost 2grand. Whilst not as bad as the other message, Dragoneer remained incredibly frustrated not only at the lack of financial help from his insurers but the slow pace of getting him badly needed help.

In a post shared July 30th he wrote: “Appointment didn’t go a planned. Same answer as before, what you have is too serious for us to treat right away. I’m gonna have to be put under anesthesia for a full biopsy,”

Dragoneer revealed his illness was more serious than he’d anticipated, and in later posts he revealed he was coughing for four hours straight and could hardly sleep.

His last post was truly heartbreaking as he wrote: “Excuse me while I go throw myself in front of a train,”

The manner of his passing infuriated many of his fans and followers who completely eviscerated the cruelty of the U.S. health insurance system.

On reddit, one user simply wrote: “This is murder. He was murdered by the US healthcare system, the same as if they’d just shot him instead of turning him away.”

Sean Piche’s death has shaken many people, most of whom were reliant in one way or another on his site in their daily lives and professions.

He would be remembered fondly as he made a great contribution to the internet, irrespective of the substantial controversies his platform sometimes generated.
