According to her husband, skydiver Freddy Chase, Lariccia and a student were doing a routine jump in Perris when things went wrong due to her running into two ‘dust devils’ – small, rotating columns of air that pick up dust and debris from the ground on hot days.

“She missed the first one, and when she maneuvered around it, she hit the second one,” Chase told KTLA 5 News about his wife’s accident.

“At that point, she was about 25 to 30 feet in the air… It sent her canopy in a downward spiral,”

Both Devrey and the student were seriously injured and sent to a nearby hospital where she succumbed to her injuries.

Her death was announced via a GoFundMe fundraiser, started by Marcelline LaRiccia to raise money to get her remains from Perris back to Maine for a proper farewell.

“It is with the heaviest of hearts that we share the tragic passing of our beloved daughter and sister, Devrey LaRiccia,” Marcelline wrote.

“Due to the circumstances, we need assistance to help Devrey get home to Maine and to the final resting place that all who knew and loved her know she deserves,”

Other people who knew Devrey took to social media to eulogize her.

“DEVREY!!!!! Everything is powerful about you right down to your name… You were the strength that held us all together!!!!! Your presence will forever be with us,” one tribute on Facebook read.

Devrey’s passing has devastated the communities of Sanford, Maine, Perris, California and beyond.

She will be remembered for her bubbly personality and gregarious laugh, as well as her dedication to living life to the fullest.
