The driver of a Hyundai truck with the license plate GS 9018-20 has reportedly been detained by the Ghana Police Service for allegedly abandoning his vehicle on the Tema-Mpakadan railway line, which resulted in a train accident on Thursday.
According to the police, their initial inquiry has shown that the suspect driver was not watching the truck while it was on the railroad, which caused it to collide with a newly acquired Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) train from Poland.
Although the suspect has not yet been identified, the police have stated in an update that they are still looking into the event.
The train struck the unattended vehicle that was parked in its path on a bend at around 12:10 p.m., according to the Ministry of Railways Development, when it was conducting a test run.
“Despite the immediate application of the emergency braking system, the train was unable to come to a complete stop before colliding with the vehicle.”
The Ministry said there were no fatalities from the accident, apart from damage to the driver’s cabin and the destruction of the truck.
