Dominic M. Miller and Lyndell Mays have both been charged for their role in the Kansas City shooting following the Super Bowl parade.
They both fired shots after an argument between them escalated.
The shootings following the Super Bowl parade killed one, Lisa Lopez-Galvan and wounded over 20 peole.
In the aftermath of a celebratory Kansas City Chiefs championship rally, a violent altercation escalated into a mass shooting, resulting in the death of Lisa Lopez-Galvan, a 43-year-old mother and local DJ.
Two men, Lyndell Mays and Dominic M. Miller of Kansas city, have been charged with second-degree murder among other felonies, with their actions leaving over 20 individuals injured, including children.
The incident unfolded when Mays engaged in a heated argument that quickly spiraled out of control as firearms were drawn.
Miller, who had no prior acquaintance with Mays, also participated in the shootout.
Both men are now hospitalized and under custody, with a bond set at $1 million each.
This tragic event marks the 48th mass shooting in the United States for the year 2024, a somber statistic that underscores the ongoing issue of gun violence in the nation.
It also echoes a similar incident during a sports celebration earlier in the year.
The family of Lopez-Galvan has expressed gratitude towards the efforts of law enforcement to bring justice to the victims and the Kansas City community.
“Though it does not bring back our beloved Lisa, it is comforting to know that the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office and the KCPD made it a top priority to seek justice for Lisa, the other shooting victims, those who had to witness this tragedy unfold and the Kansas City community,” the family said.
The investigation, supported by surveillance footage, paints a harrowing picture of the confrontation that led to the shooting, with both Mays and Miller allegedly initiating gunfire amidst a crowd.
As CNN notes: “Mays got into a verbal confrontation with a group of people and approached them in an “aggressive” and “angry” manner, according to the statement. He then allegedly pulled out a handgun, pointed it at one of the individuals and began chasing and shooting at him, according to the statement. Other individuals took out their firearms and appeared to start shooting at Mays, who was struck by gunfire,”
It continues: “Miller, meanwhile, allegedly positioned himself in a crowd of people, pulled out a firearm and appeared to begin shooting, the statement says. An unidentified person shot Miller in the lower back, causing him to fall to the ground,”
These two defendants, Lyndell Mays Kansas City and Dominic M.Miller are separate from the two teenagers who face gun-related and resisting arrest charges and are in secure detention at the Juvenile Detention Center.
As the city mourns the loss of Lopez-Galvan and grapples with the impact of the shooting, the legal proceedings against Mays and Miller continue, with the potential for additional arrests as the case develops.
The community’s resilience is being tested as they seek to heal and find solace in the wake of this senseless act of violence.
