Reggae dancehall artists Emmanuel Samini, better known as Samini, and Charles Nii Armah-Mensah Jr., better known as Shatta Wale, are at odds over the recently announced #PlayGhana campaign, sparking a heated discussion within Ghana’s music scene.

The effort, led by Ms. Gyankromah Akufo-Addo, Director of the Creative Arts Agency (CAA), is to encourage DJs and music producers to give preference to Ghanaian songs over the holiday season in order to promote and amp up local music.

The campaign was not without its critics, but it gained momentum swiftly. Shatta Wale questioned the initiative’s viability and motivations on social media.

The ‘My Level’ singer doubted the campaign’s chances of success and mocked the notion of “banning” foreign music in a series of posts.

Samini reacted to Shatta Wale’s remarks by questioning the reasoning behind the joke about the #PlayGhana campaign and implying that the “Ayoo” hitmaker was simply criticizing since the idea wasn’t his own.
