E T Mensah, Politician Dead at 77

E T Mensah, a Ghanaian politician and former Member of Parliament for Ningo Prampram in the Greater Accra Region, has died aged 77.

E T Mensah died in South Africa on the night of Sunday, October 1st 2023 after a lengthy battle with illness.

He was 77 years old.

A 5-term Ningo Prampram Member of Parliament, E T Mensah was a veteran politician who played a pivotal role in the current status of Ghana.

E T Mensah Politician biography

Enoch Teye Mensah (born 17 May 1946) is a Ghanaian politician popularly referred to as E T Mensah.

He was a Minister for Education and a Member of Parliament in Ghana from January 1997 till January 2017.

Mensah was born on 17 May 1946 at Prampram in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana.

He had his early education at the SNAPS College of Accountancy, which he completed in 1968.

He also had his RSA III in 1970, and he became a fellow of the Institute of Financial Accountants in 1986.

E T Mensah was an Account Officer and worked at the University of Ghana, Legon as Accounting Officer.

During the time of the PNDC military regime in Ghana, he was the long-time Chief Executive of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), akin to being the Mayor of the City of Accra.

Upon the formation of the National Democratic Congress in 1992, E.T Mensah joined the party.

He then stood for the Ghanaian parliamentary election in 1996 for Ningo Prampram on the ticket of the NDC, winning his first term.

He would end up holding the seat for exactly two decades, winning five consecutive terms.

Mensah lost the NDC primaries to Sam George on 21 November 2015, ending his two-decade-long monopoly.

He once served as the Minority Chief Whip in parliament prior to the Ghanaian parliamentary election in 2008.

In January 2009, he became the MMjority Chief Whip in parliament.

Married with seven children, E T Mensah politician was awarded the Companion of the Order of the Volta by former President John Agyekum Kufuor.
