Ghana’s President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has been branded a dictator after police officers arrested peaceful protestors in the capital, Accra.
Activists organised the #OccupyJulorbiHouse (Julorbi, a corruption of Jubilee House, to wit ‘son of a thief’) today, September 21st 2023.
However, police officers broke up the protest and arrested those involved, most of whom were shipped to several police stations around the capital city.
The stunning abuse of human rights by police officers has sparked online protests.
President Akufo-Addo, who led the Kumi Preko demonstration in 1995 – one of Ghana’s largest ever demonstrations – has been branded a dictator over ordering officers to stop a peaceful protest.
“People want to have a peaceful protest because of your horrible government. You’ve arrested them, seized their phones, made sure lawyers can’t help them. Is this a democracy? #OccupyJulorbiHouse,” a social media user wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
One of the protestors, Nii Lexis, also wrote on Twitter: “We’ve just been arrested and being taken to the Regional Office. Don’t let this deter you. This is what they wanted. Do whatever little you can do to get every single person safe. Let God be the judge of all men. #OccupyJulorbiHouse,”
But perhaps the most glaring human right abuse was captured right on tv as one of the protestors was carted away by police in the middle of his interview.
