Paper Straws Causes Cancer – Scientists Warn The Public Against Using It

Published by

According to a recent study, drinking with paper straws could have detrimental effects on one’s health.

Paper straws, according to European researchers, contain “forever chemicals” that can take a very long time to degrade and have been linked to cancer, thyroid, and liver issues.

Researchers examined 39 different straw brands and discovered that 90% of the paper varieties included compounds referred to as poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).

They were present in the majority of the straws examined, with paper and bamboo straws constituting the bulk of cases. Stainless steel staples were the only ones free of PFAS.

According to the scientists, PFAS compounds have the potential to be dangerous for people, animals, and the environment.

They survive for thousands of years and degrade very slowly. They have been linked to a variety of health issues, including decreased response to vaccinations, low birth weight, thyroid illness, elevated cholesterol, liver damage, kidney cancer, and testicular cancer.

Paper straws are highly dangerous to human health and cause cancer, according to scientists.

They are used to create regular things that are stain, heat, and water-resistant, such as non-stick cookware and outdoor clothes.

‘Straws manufactured from plant-based materials, such as paper and bamboo, are generally touted as being more sustainable and eco-friendly than those made from plastic,’ said Dr. Thimo Groffen, an environmental scientist at the University of Antwerp.

However, “that’s not necessarily true,” given the presence of PFAS in these straws.
