The Accra-London road trip that just came to an end was pricey – the tourists involved spent on average Ghc 15,000 on fuel every single day of their 14 day road trip!

The feat continues to capture the imagination of Ghanaians and we’ve gathered some unknown facts about the trip.

Who Was on the Trip and what Cars did they use?

The Accra-London road trip involved 12 tourism enthusiasts driving all the way from Accra to London by road – with a couple of ferry stops along the way!

The trip was organised by Wanderlust Ghana and involved 12 people.

They included Kwabena Peprah the leader, his son Teddy Peprah, Kwadwo Saka, Richard Anim and others plus only one woman, Nana Afua Serwaa, also known as “Shecanic”.

What countries did they visit?

The Accra-London road trip saw the enthusiasts driving through eight countries. Five were on the African continent – Cote d’Ivoire, Mali, Senegal, Mauritania and Morocco and three on the European continent – Spain, France and UK.

What route did they use?

The Accra-London road trip started from Accra on Sunday, July 23rd 2023 and ended in London on Sunday, August 6th 2023 – a journey of 10,000 kilometres.

The journey started from Accra through Aburi, Nsawam, Kumasi, and Sunyani to Dormaa and then to Cote d’Ivoire via Golokrom.

From Cote d’Ivoire, they drove through Mali, Senegal, Mauritania and Morocco – where they picked a ferry across the Mediterranean to Algeciras in Spain.

They drove to Barcelona via Valencia, entered the Principality of Monaco, drove through France and then crossed the English Channel into the UK.

How many cars did they use?

The 12-member team used 5 cars for their journey – a Mercedez Benz G-Wagon, two Toyota Landcruisers (V8), Lexus RX 350 and a Ford F150, Raptor.

How much fuel did they use?

The trip from Accra to London saw the five vehicles using about 250 litres of fuel per day.

That calculates to just over Ghc 3,000 each on fuel each day – using the current price of almost Ghc 13 per litre in Ghana.

So that’s about Ghc 15,000 for all five cars per day!

Obviously, fuel prices vary across countries but that’s just a simplistic average based on our own fuel prices.

How many people arrived in London?

12 people set out from Ghana but only 8 made it to London.

One person dropped off in Senegal because of work-related reasons and two others also dropped off in Morocco – whilst the G-Wagon driver infamously never made it to the UK and is now touring mainland Europe.
