Ursula Owusu Ekuful, the member of Parliament for Ablekuma West has been accused of being a lesbian.
The accusation was made by MP for Tamale Central, Ibrahim Murtala Muhammad on the floor of Parliament on Wednesday, July 5th 2023 who allegedly whispered that Ursula Owusu is a lesbian.
The Ablekuma West MP, who doubles as Minister for Communication and Digitalisation, replied that Murtala was mad.
This occurred during the second reading of the LGBTQ bill in Ghana – the Human Sexual Right and Ghanaian Family Values Bill (LGBTQ+), 2021
Second Deputy Speaker, Andrew Asiamah, had given time to members to contribute to the bill after the House had unanimously adopted the report on the bill championed by the MP for Asante Akim North, Andy Appiah-Kubi.
Most members condemned the act of LGBTQ in Ghana but Ursula had tempered her comments a bit.
At this point, Ursula claims she heard Murtala whispering in the back that she is a practitioner of LGBTQ – ie – Ursula Owusu is a lesbian.
Although Murtala did not speak into the microphone and, therefore, could not be regarded as an official statement, Ursula said she heard it.
In a reply, she also emphatically said that Murtala was mad.
According to Ursula Owusu she must be a lesbian because Murtala caught her in bed with his sister, or his mother, or his daughter.
She added that only a mad man would describe a fellow member of Parliament as a membebr of the LGBTQ community in Ghana.
Ursula Owusu flared up as a categorical denial of her being lesbian.

Who Is Ursula Owusu?
Hon. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful (born 20 October 1964) hails from Akim Oda in the Eastern Region of Ghana. She is a lawyer, women’s rights activist and a Ghanaian parliamentarian representing Ablekuma West Constituency. She is currently the Minister of Communications and Digitalisation.

Ursula hails from Akim Oda in the Eastern Region of Ghana. She attended Labone Senior High School and proceeded to Mfantisman Girls Secondary School for sixth form education.
She continued to the University of Ghana and the Ghana School Of Law, where she obtained an LLB. She was called to the bar in 1990.
Ursula Owusu obtained a master’s degree in Conflict, Peace and Security from the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre.
She worked for ten years as a lawyer at Akufo-Addo, Prempeh & Co. law firm before moving into the telecommunication industry to lead a telecom technology company.
In 2012, she was elected to be the Member of Parliament for the new constituency Ablekuma West Constituency as their first member of parliament, a position she’s held till date.

LGBTQ bill in Ghana
The Ghanaian anti-LGBT bill (or formally Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill) is a proposed law in Ghana that would introduce wide-ranging restrictions on LGBT+ rights.
Homosexuality in Ghana was first criminalised under the Offences Against the Person Act 1861, when Ghana was under British rule. The Act was implemented in all British colonies.
Following independence, Section 104 of the Ghanaian Criminal Code of 1960 criminalised “unnatural carnal knowledge.”
The bill is 36 pages long and describes its objective as “to provide for proper human sexual rights and Ghanaian family values; proscribe LGBTQ+ and related activities; proscribe propaganda of, advocacy for or promotion of LGBTTQQIAAP+ and related activities; provide for the protection of and support for children, persons who are victims or accused of LGBTTQQIAAP+ and related activities and other persons; and related matters.”
Ghanaian human rights NGO Rightify Ghana called the bill “an attack on our fundamental human rights” stating that it would “steal our freedoms of speech and expression, right to privacy, freedoms of association and assembly, as well as rights to healthcare, employment, housing and others.”[10] The Humanist Association of Ghana called the bill an attempt “to further oppress the LGBTQI+ community as well as allies,” stating that Ghana’s international reputation “has taken a big hit.”
Among Ghanaian political parties, the New Patriotic Party, the People’s National Convention, the National Democratic Congress, the Convention People’s Party, the National Democratic Party, and the All People’s Congress announced support for bill. The Liberal Party of Ghana announced opposition to the bill.
During debate on the floor of the house regarding the bill in July 2023, Ablekuma West MP Ursula West went bonkers after being called lesbian by a fellow MP.
