Three Ghanaian PhD Students In the U.S. Involved In Fatal Car Crash Leaving Two Dead And One Critically Injured

Three Ghanaian PhD students in the United States, Abena Gyamfua Ofori, Alberta Odura Quartey and Hannah Segbefia, were involved in a fatal car crash that killed two and left one critically injured.

The three were all students of Clemson University in South Carolina were they were studying their post-graduate courses.

The three were travelling together on June 18, 2023, when they were involved in a tragic car accident.

The fatal incident occurred on Highway 11 near Elizabeth Drive, South Carolina, when two vehicles traveling in opposite directions collided head-on, leading to the unfortunate demise of Abena Ofori and Alberta Quartey.

Hannah Segbefia, the third member of the group, survived but is currently in critical condition in the hospital needing multiple surgeries.

Abena Gyamfua Ofori, 31, is a former student of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology who was studying a postgraduate English course at Clemson.

Albert Odura Quartey, 23, was also a KNUST alum who served as a Teaching Assitant at the university after completion of her studies before joining Clemson University for a PhD in Electrical Engineering.

The third member of the group, Hannah Segbefia, who survived, is an old student of Wesley Girls High School who came to the USA in 2023 to pursue a Ph.D. in Biochemistry.

The accident left Segbefia with broken ribs, hands, and other severe health complications. She has had two surgeries and has yet to undergo more to correct her broken hip and a fractured hand.
