Amakye Dede, a legendary figure in Ghanaian highlife, has at last spoken out about the contentious event at the 20th Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMAs), where he was forced into naming Kuami Eugene as the country’s next highlife monarch.
Amakye Dede admitted in a recent interview that he did not make the choice to give the young musician such a title.
Several people in the music industry criticized Amakye Dede for what they saw as an impolite gesture after the incident, which happened in 2019.
Nevertheless, Amakye Dede made it clear that he had initially turned down the request to crown Kuami Eugene when it was made to him by Kiki Banson, who was in charge of the VGMAs’ artist repertoire.
