Alban S. K. Bagbin, the Speaker of Parliament of Ghana, recently expressed his adamant opposition to the legalization of LGBTQ+ activities in the nation. Bagbin even went so far as to say that he would rather die than see Ghana approve of such behaviors.
Bagbin stated his views during a press event in Tamale that was a part of the 30th Anniversary Celebration of the Parliament of Ghana. He cited his Catholic beliefs and the idea that legalizing LGBTQ+ activities would be an insult to divine order.

The Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, 2021—commonly referred to as the Anti-LGBTQI+ Bill—raises the issue.
While criminalizing LGBTQ+ acts, the measure seeks to promote Ghanaian family values. It is now being considered by the Parliamentary Select Committee on Constitutional, Legal, and Parliamentary Affairs. If found guilty under this law, offenders might spend up to 10 years in prison.
The bill’s proponents believe that it is in line with Ghana’s cultural and religious values and that it discourages what they view as abnormal while protecting what they consider to be normal. They contend that adopting this measure will not go against the 1992 Constitution’s provisions.
