Custom Duties In Ghana Make No Sense – Micheal Blankson Lambasts Ghana Revenue Over High Rates

American-born Ghanaian comedian Michael Blackson has called out the Ghana Revenue Authority for charging exorbitant duties on items shipped to Ghana from foreign lands.

Micheal Blankson was unhappy he had to pay twice the value of the product he sent to Ghana just to receive it and risk losing it to an auction if he fails to cough up the amount.

He revealed, in a tweet, that he had shipped some items worth $10,000 from the United States of America to Ghana to help set up a business for his unemployed cousins.

But upon reaching the harbor, Micheal revealed that customs asked him to pay another $10,000 as clearance fees or the items would be auctioned off for a cheaper price, an action he described as senseless.

“I have cousins in Ghana with no jobs and no income. Because the country lacked jobs, they wanted to open a store if I could help.

“I purchased about $10k of items and when they arrived thru DHL, customs said they will need to pay $10k to retrieve them. IT MAKES NO SENSE @GhanaRevenue,” he fumed.

Based on his experience, the comedian advised people with intentions of sending items from abroad to family and friends in Ghana to be prepared to spend an outrageous amount on clearance.

“If you are planning on shipping anything to Ghana, be prepared to pay a duty fee as high as the thing you shipped and if you don’t pick them up in a timely fashion they will auction your belongings. Why @GhanaRevenue?

He went on to complain about how he paid huge sums of money to have his cars and furniture shipped to Ghana but refuse to pay anything crazy for just three boxes of clothes.

“I shipped some old furniture by ship duty was $1500 that didn’t bother me, later I shipped my 2014 S class duty was $16k that didn’t bother me but 3 boxes of clothes sent thru DHL that cost me $10k and you want me to pay $10k to get it out? Now you going too far.”

Also, Micheal Blackson highlighted the struggles of the average Ghanaian due to the depreciation of the Ghana Cedi and has asked for the authorities involved to find a better solution to help locals survive.

“Bad enough our money went from $1 to 5 cedis to $1 to 15 cedis. Our people are suffering and nothing is affordable for the poor locals. Let’s find a better solution to help our people of Ghana,” he shared in a separate tweet.
