The immense popularity of Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia in the NPP was on display on Saturday, November 19th 2022 after he was mobbed by excited party faithful.
A group of cheering party supporters mobbed the Vice President who is expected to contest for the flagbearer position in the party ahead of the 2024 elections.
The incident occurred in Kumasi during the funeral service of the late mother of Madam Cecilia Dapaah, the Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources of the Republic of Ghana.
The final funeral rites for the late mother of Honourable Cecilia’s Dapaah occurred Saturday in Kumasi.
Numerous bigwigs from across the political spectrum made their way to the Ashanti Regional Capital for the event.
When the Vice President’s delegation arrived at the funeral home to pay their final respects to Madam Cecelia Dapaah’s late mother, hundreds of NPP supporters wearing funeral attire and t-shirts honoring the deceased could not contain their excitement or admiration for the Vice President.
Things got louder when the Veep was about to leave the funeral grounds as he was greeted with even more cheers, adulation and victory songs.

Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is expected to be locked in a titanic battle with Trade and Industry Minister, Alan Kyeremanten, for the NPP flagbearer race.
The Ashanti Region, where Kyeremanten hails from, will be a crucial battleground as Bawumia could significantly increase his chances of winning if he can garner support from the region.
Recently, a former Member of the Council of State, Nana Obiri Boahen, said there is no way Alan can beat Bawumia in the Ashanti Region.
His comment was in reaction to an opinion poll about the NPP’s presidential primary which projects Alan Kyerematen to easily win in the Ashanti Region.
Speaking in an interview on Hot 93.9FM’s ‘Dwene Ho Biom” political talk show hosted by Agya Wusu, Nana Obiri Boahen stated without mincing words that Alan Kyeremanten can never defeat Dr. Bawumia in the Ashanti Region.
“Alan Kyeremanten can never beat Bawumia in the Ashanti Region. I’m quoting William Shakespeare: No man born of a woman can beat Bawumia in the Ashanti Region.” Obiri Boahen said.
Per Obiri Boahen’s statement and on the evidence of the funeral, the Vice President appears to be in a strong position to run away with the NPP flagbearer race, as a recent poll from the UK-based Info and Assessment Research firm seems to suggest.
Per that poll, Vice President Dr Bawumia would easily beat Mr Kyeremanten for the NPP nomination and indeed holds a lead against former President Mahama in the general.
The poll found Vice President Bawumia polling 46% to the former leader’s 35% in the 2024 elections.
The poll, conducted between 27th October to 3rd November, sampled 254,759 potential voters across the 16 regions of Ghana in face-to-face polling.
