Customers of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) using its new prepaid meters in Accra, Tema and other parts of the country have been plunged into darkness for over five days now as the company is unable to recharge the meters.
On social media – from Twitter to Facebook – customers have been crying out over having to sleep in darkness and ECG, like a good Ghanaian company, has kept mute and done nothing about fixing the issue!
This is the second time in a few months that ECG is having this issue and once again, the company’s incompetence is putting many Ghanaians in deep inconvenience through no fault of theirs.
Many customers have had to sleep in darkness for days, some for as many as five days since the problem started last week.
Productive hours are being lost, stored food is going bad and those using electricity to run businesses like cold stores are running losses into the thousands of cedis.
Yet, ECG watches on in deep incompetence and apathy. Visits to any of their district offices would show their officers sitting in comfort, doing nothing whilst giving vague assurances that their technicians are working on it.
This writer was at two ECG District Offices in Tema Saturday, November 12th 2022 and was unable to procure credit for my CLOU NEW ECG prepaid meter.
Since Saturday till this moment, nothing has changed and ECG remains aloof whilst customers cry out.
After facing similar issues in September/October, ECG made public announcements that customers who lost money due to their incompetence would be compensated but till date, there is no indication anything of the sort happened.
At the moment, the suffering has become unbearable, for yours truly and thousands of other Ghanaians who have committed no crime other than being forced to deal with a useless institution like ECG.
Below are some curated posts from frustrated Ghanaians on social media.
The media, the entire general public, regulators and leaders must come together and call out ECG for their incompetence for the issue to be fixed as soon as possible and eventually, heads must roll as well.
The kind of incompetence needed for this to happen twice in three months with ECG having no clue how to solve it each time is alone for the company to be disbanded but ebe ‘Ghana we dey’ so nothing will happen as usual.
