The Director General of the National Lotteries Authority (NLA), Sammi Awuku, has debunked viral reports that Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia was booed in the Volta Region during his speech at the Hogbetsotso festival.
Speaking in an interview on Peace Fm, Awuku said Bawumia received a rapturous welcome in the area, adding that his speech was also generally well-received and was cheered on by the over 2,000 people in the park as he listed the government’s achievements.
Awuku said whilst there was booing, that occurred with about 30 people out of the entire crowd of over 2,000.
Over the weekend, viral reports emerged that Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, was booed by a crowd at the Hogbetsotso festival in the Volta Region.
A short clip emerged of the Vice President delivering a speech at the festival and being booed by some members of the crowd.
Reacting to that, Sammi Awuku said the booing public was minuscule considering the entire population of the crowd at the event.
Awuku also said listening to the full-length video makes it clear that Bawumia was actually cheered on for a vast majority of his speech.
“The vice president arrived at Anloga to a rousing welcome; this is not hearsay (I was there). The people at the park were more than 2000… as the vice president was mentioning the achievement of the government, you could hear people cheering him. If you get the full video, you would see the people cheering as he was listing the achievement, then a group of people standing at the corner of the grounds started rushing to the centre just behind the media.
“So, whereas you have one group of people, about 500 or so, to the right cheering on the president, these thirty people started chanting ‘away’. They formed an insignificant portion of the 2000 people who had gathered,” he said in Twi.
He reiterated that the vice president and team from the government were generally received well by the people of Anloga despite the fact that the area was a stronghold of the opposition National Democratic Congress.
Asked if it was right for Bawumia to use such an event to politik via naming the government’s achievements, Sammi Awuku said the vice president was right to talk about those achievements at the festival.
According to Awuku, as the head of Ghana’s Economic Management team, the Veep has to let the people know what the government is doing to alleviate the hardships they are currently facing.
