Ghana is nowhere to be found after Forbes magazine ranked the top 20 musicians in Africa, with a whopping 7 artistes (35%).of the entire list coming from Nigeria.
Our so-called big 3 ‘S’ – Shatta Wale, Stonebwoy and Samini – were nowhere to be found.
Meanwhile, it seems the new generation of Kidi, Kuami Eugene, Black Sherif and others, have yet to do enough to reach that level yet.
This scathing indictment of Ghanaian music was released by Forbes in an article titled “THE PLAYLIST: AFRICA’S TOP 20 MUSICIANS,”
Forbes said that African music is massively on the rise globally, particular through the genres of Afrobeats and more recently, Amapiano.
Forbes wrote: “THE MUSIC EMANATING OUT OF AFRICA TODAY IS RECORD-BREAKING IN EVERY SENSE. WITH THE NEW SOUNDS, THERE HAVE BEEN NEW PATHWAYS TO SUCCESS FOR AFRICAN ARTISTS.
“THESE CREATORS HAVE TAKEN EVERYTHING FROM AMAPIANO TO AFROBEATS AND TOLD THE AFRICAN GROWTH STORY, IN DECIBELS THAT HAVE MADE THE WORLD SIT UP.
“EVEN AS MORE GRAMMY AWARDS FIND A HOME ON THE CONTINENT, THESE TOP 20 MUSICAL ARTISTS ARE ON TRACK TO DELIVER MORE. TOGETHER THEY SAY THAT THE FUTURE OF THE AFRICAN MUSIC INDUSTRY IS BIG, BRIGHT AND BOUNTIFUL.”
