In the Japanese city of Nara, close to Kyoto, Abe fell to the ground while bleeding from gunshot wounds to his neck and chest.
According to the authorities, one of the bullets hit his heart, killing the 67-year-old.
The doctors at Nara Medical University Hospital claimed they attempted to staunch the bleeding from his wounds after he was taken there in a hurry.
They also claim that a transfusion was performed, although it was ultimately unsuccessful in saving him. Abe passed away just after 5 o’clock.
Tetsuya Yamagami, the accused shooter, was apparently apprehended by police.
He had previously been charged with attempted murder before Abe’s passing was made public.
According to local reports, the police recovered what appeared to be a homemade gun that the suspect had been holding.
The current Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has called the attack on Abe a “heinous act,” adding, “It is barbaric and malicious, and it cannot be tolerated.”
Prior to Sunday’s elections for the Upper House of Parliament, Abe was in Nara campaigning.
