Ebony Reigns Early Life
Ebony Reigns was born on 16th February 1997 as Priscilla Opoku-Kwarteng in Dansoman, a suburb of Accra. She was raised alongside her siblings in the urban areas of Accra but hailed from the Brong Ahafo region. Her parents are Nana Poku Kwarteng and Beatrice Oppong Marthin. Ebony is affably known as Nana Heemaa (Oheema) by her close relatives.
Education
She started her basic education at Seven Great Princess Academy in Dansoman, Accra, and continued to a high school education at Methodist Girls High School at Mamfe in the Akuapim North District of the Eastern Region, Ghana.
Reports and throwback photos proves that Ebony was an entertainment enthusiast. She quit high school in second year in pursuit of her music career.
Music Career
The young talent was discovered by musician turn record label owner Bullet and was signed to his Ruff Town records as his first act.
She came out with her first single, “Dancefloor”, in December 2015, with a video and audio release. The song became a radio hit, landing her a nomination for the “unsung” category at the 2016 Ghana Music Awards.
In March 2016 Ebony released her major hit single “Kupe”. She was signed to Ruff Town Records and Midas Touch Inc.
She went on to release a couple of hit songs and toured around the continent before she died in 2018.
Bullet is quoted to have said Ebony made him who he is today as one of the biggest record labels in the country.
Awards
In 2018, Ebony won Vodafone Ghana Music Awards Artiste of the Year, Vodafone Ghana Music Awards Afro Pop Song of the Year with her song ‘Sponsor’, and Vodafone Ghana Music Awards Album of the Year.
She won Most Influential Artiste at 2017 Merit Awards, Bass Awards 2017 Artiste of the Year, People’s Celebrity Awards 2017 Favourite Female Musician.
2016 4syte Music Video Awards Best Female Video and New Discovery, Bass Awards Best Dancehall Video for his song Dance Floor.
Death
Ebony Reigns was killed instantly in a traffic collision on 8 February 2018 whilst returning from Sunyani to Accra after a visit to her mother. Her assistant and longtime friend Franklina Yaa Nkansah Kuri and soldier Atsu Vondee were also killed in the fatal accident. The only survivor of the fatal crash was the driver. She died eight days before her 21st birthday.
Her final funeral rites were held at the forecourt of the statehouse, Accra, and she was buried at Osu cemetery on Saturday, March 24, 2018. In preparation for the funeral, the late Ebony’s family received a lot of donations from prominent personalities, government, and private institutions.
