Ghanaian Professor Anthony Kwame Appiah Elected President of the American Academy of Arts and Letters

A Ghanaian professor in the United States has been named to a prestigious office as President of the American Academy of Arts and Letters.

Professor Anthony Kwame Appiah, an academician at New York University, made the announcement of his new position on Twitter.

His election gives him a three year mandate as head of the organization.

“Honoured and delighted to be elected to the new President of the American Academy of Arts and Letters.

“It will be both a pleasure and a challenge to serve the Academy’s purpose to foster and sustain an interest in Literature, Music and the Fine Arts,” he wrote.

A professor of Philosophy at the New York University, Kwame Appiah also serves as a columnist for the fabled New York Times.

Aside his current appointment, he has served in the past as Board Chairman for the Man Booker Prize Committee, American Council of learned societies and also as a member of the Advisory Board for the United Nations Democracy Fund.

The Ghanaian-American academic is the son of Ghanaian lawyer Joe Appiah who was a staunch member of Ghana’s fight for Independence.
