The consequences can be so dire it lures many people into harming themselves.

A CNN report has revealed that Ghanaian women, currently rank the highest in Africa when discussing issues concerning skin whitening products.

A medical officer is winnowing down to the menace of skin bleaching, and his plea is for Ghanaians to treat themselves cautioned.

Skin bleaching is a cosmetic treatment to reduce the prominence of skin discolourations and even out the colour of the skin.

The CNN report is part of ‘White lies’, a series that investigates skin whitening practices.

It aims to uncover the root causes of colourism, the business that benefits from it, and the social and economic costs to people and communities.

Dr Emmanuel Boakye, a medical officer at the Ankaful Leprosy and General Hospital in Cape Coast, says the side effects of skin bleaching are real and must be taken seriously.

He also warned mothers against using chemicals on their children after birth as the side effects could linger.
