A Ghanaian woman in the UK, Janica Frimpong, has quit her job at a law firm after being racially abused by colleagues.
Janica had two white colleagues pass racially insensitive comments about her including claiming she ‘smells’.
After discovering the abuse, Janica left her IT role at Legal and General London and then brought her story to social media.
The 25-year old British-Ghanaian revealed on Twitter that she had suspected for a while that her white colleagues talk about her behind her back.
In order to discover the extent of the abuse, she intentionally left her phone on record whilst visiting the washroom and caught her colleagues on tape.
The comments include claims that ‘black people have a smell about them’ and ‘they don’t wash their hair’.
She posted the tape of their conversation to Twitter, labelling her two white colleagues as ‘A’ and ‘B’.
‘A’ said in the tape: “she has a smell about her, like a fried, oiled smell. Is it just me?It stresses me out.”
‘B’ replied: “It is a strong smell. I don’t know if it’s oil or what,”
‘A’: “Maybe it’s lotion”
‘B’: “It could be cocoa butter”
‘A’: “Black people have a smell about them”
‘B’: “Maybe it’s cocoa butter”
‘A’: “You know, some people smell clean and fresh – and some others”
‘B’: “You know Black people, they don’t wash their hair”
Sharing the tape, Janica wrote: “I didn’t want to have to bring this to Twitter. However, I felt there was no other way to show everyone the racists and bullies @landg_group employ to represent them. I felt forced to quit my job with them today after I experienced racism and bullying on multiple occasions,”
In response, her former employers tweeted out: “We are upset and saddened to hear about your experience. The allegations are appalling and not reflective of us or our culture. We have an internal investigation underway to identify all individuals concerned and we will do all we can to make sure this doesn’t happen again,”
It should be quite easy to fish out the culprits and fire them since audio of their conversation exists.
Unless that happens, the company’s claims are nothing but hollow PR.
