‘We’ll Empower Our Journalists To Be Fearless’ – Media General Blasts Ghana Police for Arresting Captain Smart

On Thursday morning, Captain Smart was picked up by the Police for allegedly using his television show to  call for an “uprising” against the government.

The Ghana Police released a statement after his arrest saying the presenter made “some unsavoury pronouncements that hinge on peace and security” of the country.

“The Nima Divisional Police Command today, Thursday, December 2, 2021, arrested Blessed Godsbrain Smart popularly known as “Captain Smart”, the host of Onua TV/FM morning show in Accra,” part of the statement read.

Captain Smart’s arrest has been described by many as a political witch-hunt and Media General, the company the vociferous personality works with has added thier voice to the masses.

Media General managed to get their employee released later that day but took to thier official social media handles to criticise the Police for detaining Captain Smart.

The media house called the arrest as an egregious example of intolerance  saying it was not an isolated case.

Media General added that they will continue to empower their journalists to be “fearless, honest and forthright in their professional outlook always.”

We are increasingly concerned about the new trend of arrest of journalists and media practitioners,” the company said in response to the Police,” a section of the statement said.

“Today’s arrest and detention of Captain Smart is by no means an isolated incident, but just one more egregious example of the intolerance increasingly creeping into the Ghanaian society.”
