The game show ‘Who Wants to Be A Millionaire’ has been relaunched in Nigeria.
The show returns to air after a four-year hiatus.
Meanwhile, ‘Who Wants to Be Rich’, Ghana’s equivalent show, has not aired since 2012.
The ‘Who Wants to Be A Millionaire’ show is just one example of a globally popular game show franchise which Ghanaians have been starved of.
Nigeria just finished another season of Big Brother Naija, creating a new class of celebrities and one very happy winner in Hazel ‘Whitemoney’ Onou.
These game shows are a great way to open opportunities for Ghanaians in a very hard country to live in.
However, there are zero of such opportunities around.
Even when one is launched, it doesn’t take long to flop.
We need a rich person somewhere to put their resources behind producing one of these shows.
As BB Naija has shown, if done right – game shows can be extremely popular and profitable.
Below is our list of five game shows which should be launched in Ghana today!
5. The Ghc 100,000 Pyramid
The American show is called the $100,000 Pyramid, we can call ours the 100,000 cedis pyramid.
Pyramid is a show in which ordinary people team up with celebrities to play a game of charades.
You describe an item to your partner and they have to correctly identify it.
The finale sees the contestant describe phrases to their celebrity partner and if they correctly describe them all – you win the jackpot!
It’s a simple show and involves both the common man and celebrities so no one would be left out.
4. The Chase (Ghana)
The Chase might be difficult to transplant to Ghana because you need very knowledgeable quizzing professionals to act as the ‘Chaser’, but no one said this would be easy.
In this show, a team of four people go up against a professional ‘Chaser’ to try and win a cash prize by beating them.
The contestants are given certain advantages to offset the difficulty of facing a professional quizzer.
3. Deal or no Deal GH
This is a show which has both a U.S and UK versions, but I’d prefer we go for the U.S version.
South Africa also has a version which is based on the U.S version.
In this show, the contestant tries to guess the value of money placed within 24 briefcases, one at a time.
The values could range from Ghc 1 to Ghc 1,000,000, placed in briefcases numbered from 1-24.
At the start of the show, you choose one briefcase.
You then go on to eliminate briefcases one by one by choosing a numbered briefcase to be opened.
As you eliminate more briefcases, there is a ‘banker’ who would make you offers of cash to take (deal) and walk away, depending on the value of briefcases you are yet to eliminate.
If you play to the end without making a deal, you take home the value of cash in your briefcase.
Mainly a game (and some strategy) of luck but a very exciting show and an easy way to create wealth for some ordinary Ghanaians.
2. Who Wants to Be A Millionaire (Ghana)
The show used to be around as ‘Who Wants to Be Rich’, hosted by Kafui Dey, I’m sure most of us remember it.
It aired for just three years then was taken off cancelled, never to return again.
The ‘Millionaire’ franchise sees a person trying to answer about 15 questions to win the ultimate cash prize of a million.
You have some lifelines along the way to help you.
‘Millionaire’ is quite a difficult and intellectual show but very exciting to watch.
It would be for the ‘nerds’ to also go out there and make some money.
The biggest game show on the continent currently is Big Brother Naija and it’s not even close.
The 2021 edition just came to an end and for the three months it was on air, there was not a single day that something related to the show did not trend on Twitter.
And not just Nigerian Twitter but Ghana Twitter, South African Twitter etc.
This shows there is an appetite for such a show on the continent and whoever takes the chance to bring it to Ghana is going to make their money back many times over.
The Big Brother format sees a group of young people, male and female, placed within a house and monitored 24/7.
The public then watches them as they form alliances, relationships and compete in a series of tasks.
Every week, a few contestants are voted off the show until the grand finale, where the eventual winner can take home (let’s say) Ghc 10m.
That’s my list of five game/reality shows I would like to see on television in Ghana.
Ghana’s tiny population make finding a niche for such shows a challenge but nothing is impossible if one is determined enough.
Any rich man out there ready to take the challenge and change the lives of some Ghanaians?
Anyway, this is my list – what is yours?
