It’s a normal day in Ghana’s capital Accra. Outside, life bustles on as usual. Traffic is hell, hawkers sweat in the sun to hawk their wares, and the West African sun does its best to chase everyone indoors.
Inside, at the offices of an NGO, a family is mourning following the murder of their domineering but loving mother.
Siblings Maxine, Chantel and Jude Laing are with the police trying to figure out who had killed their mother. In the midst of grief, they have to quickly bottle their emotions and get to work
Detective Mensah (Adjetey Annan) is questioning the siblings to discover any possible clues to mummy dearest’s murder when they discover an intruder hiding in one of the firm’s offices.
It was the first real clue in what would become a sprawling murder investigation and provide the show’s first, but not the last, major twist.
The Devil’s work tells this story of the murder investigation against the backdrop of the voice of the murdered Judy Laing, our omniscient narrator.
The whodunit is a genre that is woefully underrepresented in Ghanaian film and television. It’s understandable since it’s not an easy genre to write; you have to set up a mystery and then unravel it on-screen in a way that both makes sense to the audience and keeps them invested and entertained.
If anyone could do it, it’s Shirley, and she just did. By the end of the first episode of ‘The Devil’s Work’, the first big twist arrives and from then on newer mysteries unfold as other mysteries are solved.
The drama and suspense never go away throughout the show. The mystery and intrigue are always just around the corner, and nothing is ever as it seems.
The great crime writers are masters of keeping you wanting more even as you consume their content – Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Agatha Christie – you name them – and ‘The Devil’s Work’ is great at that essential element of thrillers.
With a sparrow production you know you never have to worry about the cinematography, the score, costuming etc. Everything is top-notch and easily the best in the country – by a country mile.
‘The Devil’s Work’ is must-see tv, a domestic thriller to rival any other thriller ever produced. It stars among others Joselyn Dumas, Dean Amegashie, Jessica Williams, Jasmine Baroudi, Adjetey Annan, David Oscar and many others, written and directed by Shirley Frimpong-Manso.
A limited-edition series, ‘The Devil’s Work’ starts streaming exclusively on Sparrow Station on Friday, August 5th 2021.
