The names of the First and Second Ladies of the Republic of Ghana have been on the lips of Ghanaians ever since a committee approved the regularization of the payments of salaries and allowances to them, backdated from 2017.
It is the view of the majority of Ghanaians that merely being a spouse to a sitting President does not entitle them to taxpayers’ money.
After releasing a press statement rejecting the emoluments due her, Rebecca Akuffo-Addo is on the lips of all and sundry.

Journalist Gary Al-Smith has expressed his thoughts on the issue, casting doubt on the sincerity of the press release. He posted on his Facebook handle this morning:
“If you’ve been on this page for a while, you’d know I have a very soft spot for the First Lady because of the work she does, especially in healthcare. Never met her, but a very big fan of her work. Really thrilled she did this refund. Yes, it may be alo, but she refunded it in the end. And that’s a good enough start for me. Well done and thank you for the open way in which you did it, Ma. (I don’t know if other former First Ladies will follow suit, but that will also not be bad.)”

According to the interactions on the post, a lot of people seem to believe that this gesture is just to appear sensitive to the plight of Ghanaians while milking the country anyway in other forms.
The spouses of the president and his vice were to receive about GHC899,000 each for supporting their husbands in serving the country since 2017.
The Second Lady, Samira Bawumia has joined Rebecca Akuffo-Addo in rejection of the approved salaries.
