So You Have Secretly Been Taking Money and Now Pretending to Be Offended? – Ghanaians Blast First Lady Over Refunding Allowances

Ghanaians are not impressed with the first lady rejecting her new gargantuan salary approved by a commission of old men seeking to loot the country for their political paymasters.

Per reactions on social media, people are wondering why she has kept quiet and taken that salary all these years only to pretend to be angry now after public outcry.

Ghanaians have been in an outraged mood since news broke that a Presidential committee on emoluments have recommended formalising of payments to first and 2nd ladies of Ghana.

Apparently, they have been paying them all this while in secret, but now this Akufo-Addo government wants to make it official.

The figures being thrown around were also outrageous, the presidential spouses were supposed to receive over Ghc 33,000 as monthly payments for doing nothing apart from sleeping the President.

Worse, the monies were backdated to 2017, meaning we owed these ladies 54 months of this outrageous salary.

Supporters claim they carry out unofficial duties for the state, but they knew that before their husbands run for office and were ok with doing that.

Besides, other first ladies around the world also carry out these duties and receive zero pesewas from the state.

After a fierce public outcry over this injustice, First Lady Rebecca Akufo-Addo came out to reject her new salary.

According to her, she is rejecting the new salary proposed to be given to her by the Presidential commission.

She also revealed she has been receiving allowances all this while totalling over Ghc 16,000 a month and would be refunding that to the state as well.

“…The First Lady, in consultation with the President of the Republic, has decided to refund all monies paid to her as allowances from the date of the President’s assumption of office, i.e., from January 2017 to date, amounting to GH¢899,097.84.” she said in a statement.

She also expressed anger that discussions around the salary had portrayed her as a “a venal, self-serving and self-centred woman” who is insensitive to the plight of Ghanaians.

In reaction, some Ghanaians are not too impressed.

People are wondering why she has been taking an allowance for all this while and said nothing but is now angrily refunding that allowance.
