Ghanaians are in a world of hurt right now.
The government, with no regard for the raging pandemic which has triggered an economic downturn the world over, has increased taxes on almost everything.
The budget which was read last week made it clear that government is increasing taxes across board.
The Value Added Tax (VAT) and National Health Insurance Levy (NHIL) are all going up by 1%. The financial sector cleanup, which Ghanaians never asked for, has led to a 5% tax on banks, which might be passed on to the ordinary Ghanaian. A new ‘borla tax’, nicely packaged as the ‘Sanitation and Pollution Levy’ has been introduced, and toll taxes are to go up.
All these new taxes also include a COVID relief levy which would replenish the money government lost giving out free water and electricity during the pandemic.
We are being told that these taxes are necessary because of the economic downturn brought by COVID, but that economic downturn affects Ghanaians worse of all.
Essentially people who have lost their jobs, have very little income or lost majority of their income due to the pandemic would now have to live under this undue tax burden and the associated mega increase in the cost of living.
This amounts to government f*cking its people up the bum, but Ghanaians remain passive and accept all this wickedness. Compare the reaction to a literal hike in the cost of living to the reaction to gay people just opening an office in the country – it’s night and day!
Ghanaians claim to hate sodomy – and they’ll make that very clear when the gay issue comes up – but we seem very comfortable allowing our politicians to f*ck us up the bum, without lube. We sit comfortably and accept it as just a part of life.
Until we learn to straighten our priorities and fight the real evils of society, our politicians would keep metaphorically sodomozing us whilst pointing their fingers at gay people for us to direct all our anger at.
It’s the oldest trick in politics and Ghanaians fall for it – every damn time!
