11 Health Practitioners Arrested For Selling Newborn Babies In Ghana

The Ghana Economic and Organized Crime Organization(EOCO) has arrested 2 doctors, 4 nurses and 2 social workers and 3 civilians for operating a baby harvesting and trafficking syndicate.

These persons buy and sell newborn babies for not less than 20,000 Ghana Cedis. They were arrested while undertaking one of their usual operations.

A joint statement released by EOCO and the Ghana Medical & Dental Council detailed how the suspects were set up and arrested red handed.

The statement revealed that the investigation began in June 2020 where information was gathered on the baby harvesting syndicate.

It also stated that two medical doctors, two social workers, four nurses, two mothers, and one traditional birth attendant were arrested following the investigations.

On December 31 2020, one of the doctors– Dr. Hope Mensah Quashie who worked at the 37 military hospital was arrested after selling a baby in his private hospital located at Latebiokoshie for GHc30,000.

As at the time of the report, EOCO disclosed that they had in their possession two baby boys who were sold to them during their operation.

The suspects are currently assisting investigation to arrest the entire criminal ring selling babies in Ghana.
