Jerry John Rawlings was a retired Ghanaian military officer and politician who served as the 1st President of the 4th Republic.
Papa J led a military junta in 1979 until 1992 and then served two terms as the democratic elect President of Ghana under the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

He resigned from the military, founded the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and became the first President of the Fourth Republic. He was re-elected in 1996 for four more years.
Before the Coup in 1979, he led an unsuccessful coup attempt against the ruling military government on 15 May 1979, just five weeks before scheduled democratic elections were due to take place.

Earlier this morning, Sad news came that the once vibrant man kicked the bucket at the Korle Bu Teachings Hospital after contracting COVID-19.
