A group of Ghanaian musicians have called on churches in the country to start paying royalties for using their work since they are always preaching about giving.
According to the group, churches use music in their activities which has a commercial side of raising money yet they do not pay royalties as other institutions which use music in a commercial sense do.
Churches refusal to pay royalties is in contravention of the Copyright Act 2005, Act 6904.
The group added that since churches preach about giving they should pay their royalties which is also part of giving.
Section 37 of the Copyright Act states that “Where in any public place by means of broadcasting, cinematography, jukebox or other apparatus, a sound recording or audio visual work is used, the authorized performer and producer of the sound recording or audio visual work shall be entitled to royalty in accordance with this Act.”
Whilst churches qualify for this, they have never paid their royalties.

The Ghana Music Rights Organization, GHAMRO, has however revealed they are in the process of negotiating with some churches to start collecting royalties.
I’m rooting for the churches to start ‘giving’ to the musicians, after all we’ve been told God loves a cheerful giver.
