Desperate to Retain Power, Nana Akufo-Addo Extends Free Water and Electricity Package for 3 Months

Do not be deceived, this is a cynical ploy by an increasingly desperate government to hold onto power as elections approach.

Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, presenting government’s mid-year budget review in Parliament today, revealed that government are extending the period for free electricity and water for 3 more months.

According to him, this is to further prove the government’s commitment to alleviate the suffering of Ghanaians.

“That is also why we further reduced electricity prices by half and completely provided potable water for free for everybody since March this year. And we will extend it for another three months,” Ofori-Atta said.

This extension for electricity, however, extends only to lifeline consumers, those who costume 50 kilowatt hours or less every month, whilst the free water extension is for all consumers.

Over the past few weeks, the decision by government to hold the voter registration exercise despite staunch opposition and to keep SHS students in school even as they get infected with COVID has generated an intense public backlash.

Don’t be fooled, this sudden gesture is to cover up the complaints of Ghanaians and make the government look good as elections approach.

That’s the kind of political games our parties play with us these days.
